OPEK VUM-201-SMA - VHF/UHF Dual Band Mobile Ham Radio Antenna

KB2SEO, Drew here- I purchased the antenna so i could hit the local repeater, 145.230 in Chatsworth, GA. Our area is a challenge as you proceed West or North of Chatsworth due to hilly terrain after you leave Dalton. I am using the radio on the 5 watt setting, and could not believe how well it did! I travel 51 miles to work, the last 15 of it involves some RF black holes that only my 5/8 wave Larsen could punch through! But to my pleasant surprise, the little OPEK DID IT. there was one deep valley any VHF rig would get swallowed up in, But I would venture to say with this antenna on the center of my wife's 2011 Chevy Impala, I was able to make it back to the 230 repeater! No, it's not 45 watts and my 5/8th, But it sure beats trying to talk off the HT's antenna. I could hear and hit the repeater, some times scratchy , out performed the little comet 2/440 I have been using for several years. If you use rental cars with your HT, or just want something to use on the family car as a back up- You would be hard pressed to beat the performance of the VUM-201SMAF! Mine is a keeper! 73, Drew McCarsky-KB2SEO

For the price this is an excellent antenna. I purchased a Baofeng UV82 as my first ham radio last October and use this antenna when mobile. As I was still new to ham I didn't want to write a review since I really had, and still have, a lot to learn. Since then I have used several other antennas in the mobile and despite its size the antenna really does work great. When using it with the HT I would even rather have this antenna compared to my others because of the small coax it is not hard to handle the radio and the larger coax is also kinda hard on the little SMA stud. Rare earth mag works great and has never popped off on me. Great to use, or for the price great for a backup or just to play and compare.

As a WINNER of a monthly contest for this antenna, I find it slightly better than the stock antenna on my Baofeng dualband handi-talkie. I have hit and missed into local repeaters 25-30 miles away. Line of sight.
