The 7516 Coaxial Static Arrestor is an "air gap" arrestor. If you are on a budget, this device is a better than doing nothing. As with all such protection devices, you must connect it to an earth ground for it to work correctly. It has UHF Male (PL-259) to UHF Female (SO-239) connectors. You can used our ARS-G517 adapter to convert the male side to a female.
The arrestor is rated to 500 MHz Max. Power rating: 1500-Watts (PEP) for frequencies below 60 MHz. Few, if any, arrestors can withstand a direct lightning strike; however, when installed properly arrestors can help prevent costly repairs to sensitive radio equipment due to high energy transients from nearby lightning strikes. A metal link opens in the presence of excessive energy giving those surges a direct path to ground, thus protecting your equipment. The arrestor is designed with a rugged nickel plated brass housing and UHF connectors.
Disconnect the coaxial connector at your base antenna, install the arrestor and reconnect the coaxial cable. Run a #6 or #4 (preferred) copper ground wire from the connector housing to earth ground. The ground wire offers a low resistance path that will allow atmospheric static and electrical charges to be totally or partially discharged to earth ground.
For best results, we recommend that the ground wire be at least #6 guage copper and that the connector is soldered to the wire to protect against corrosion causing resistance. Also, for best results drive a ground rod into the earth several feet. Copper ground rods are readily available at most home improvement stores or farm supply businesses.
We also offer Gas-Arc surge protectors / lightning arrestors for improved protection.
